LATITUDE 43 Bar + Grille
Waterways Permit + Landscape Design / Gloucester, MA
Latitude 43 is a restaurant and bar with a unique aesthetic experience located on the picturesque Gloucester Harbor.
But it was not always that way. In 2006 the owner of Latitude 43 was seeking to overhaul the dilapidated site and turn it into a coastal and eclectic restaurant destination. Although the municipality was excited about the renovation, local, state, and federal agencies regulating public water bodies had significant concerns about how public access, utilities, stormwater, site layout, and interation between the working harbor would be treated in the revived establishment. Extensive site permits were required from the following regulatory bodies:
• Local Conservation Commission
• Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection Wetlands Division
• Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection Waterways Division
• Chapter 91 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Navigable Waters Permit
WDG worked closely with each agency and neighborhood group to make certain that all of their concerns were addressed while protecting the beauty and ambiance of the restaurant. This included detailed utility, stormwater control, erosion and sediment control, and dock reconstruction plans along with preparation of all of the required permitting documents.
WDG also provided landscape architecture design for the outside patios sitting areas, which would become the hallmark and brand of the restaurant, in this very busy urban waterfront area. This design incorporated elements to make sure the restaurant patrons experience the unique harbor environment while still having a private space that was insulated from the bustling harbor and frontage roadway.
