On-Call Bridge Inspection Services
Various Locations - Six State Region
This U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE) project required the full inspection of Army Corps bridge structures located throughout the New England District of the North Atlantic Division.
Most of the COE bridges in this contract provide pedestrian and vehicular access to flood control structures at the numerous major flood control facilities (dams) across New England. In most cases, the control tower in a reservoir allows Army Corps hydraulic engineers and flood managers to raise and lower the water levels within the restrained rivers, protecting millions of acres against potential flooding. These bridges are typically single span, simply supported one lane structures with spans of up to 150 feet.
WDG's first assignment was to perform the bi-annual inspection for the Corps’ most visible and well known structures, the Bourne and Sagamore Bridges over the Cape Cod Canal. Over a six month period, our firm helped inspect these significant large scale truss bridges. Constructed in 1935, each suspension truss carries thousands of vehicles per year. These seven-span continuous trusses support four lanes of two-way traffic and are 2,384 and 1,408 feet in length, respectively. Each bridge is 550 feet high at their tallest point and provide a 135 foot vertical clearance for vessels. The canal itself is the widest sea level canal in the world and provides over 16,000 nautical trips annually, with over half being heavy commercial shipping. Completed in 1928, the canal is 17.5 miles long and attracts over 6 million visitors a year.
