Gloucester Station
MBTA Commuter Rail Station Improvements Project / Gloucester, MA
Due to it’s Central Business District location, the existing Gloucester Station functioned mostly as a pedestrian station, providing fewer than 20 spaces for commuter parking. This Project, initiated by Federal NexTEA monies, promises to expand parking to almost 200 spaces, while at the same time dramatically enhancing station amenities. The land selected allowed for divergent uses, including development of a private commercial/retail facility and flood storage/mitigation for the city.
The new facility is highlighted by an Inter-modal Bus Transfer area, state-of-the-art Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) communications, full length low level platforms, ADA Accessibility via a new Mini-high Platform, and Enhanced Pedestrian Access. Because land taking was involved there was extensive public participation and a permitting component that included numerous public meetings and presentations. The public development of this station will be a stimulus for the economic development of the entire CBD area that surrounds it.
Project elements included: Transit Station Site Design, Parking Circulation & Layout - Hazardous Materials Testing & Mitigation, Special Soil Supports for Parking Surfaces, Landscaping, Extensive Stormwater Management, Wetlands & Environmental Permitting, Traffic Management, New Lighting & Utilities, Community Awareness Participation.
