Boston College

Infrastructure Master Planning / Chestnut Hill + Brighton Campuses

In 2005, Boston College purchased 67 acres from the Catholic Archdiocese of Boston. This major acquisition, located directly across Commonwealth Avenue from their existing main Chestnut Hill campus (64 acres) more than doubles the size of its existing main campus. In 2008, BC unveiled a $1.6 billion strategic investment plan that will revolutionize Boston College and place it among the elite universities of higher education.

Working close with the College’s Capital Projects Management department, Waterfield Design was retained to review, study, and analyze BC’s existing and proposed facility infrastructure to ensure that all development within their 200 acre total campus is adequately protected against stormwater flooding, a problem that has inflicted costly damage to many major campus assetts.

Waterfield helped formulate and inform BC’s 10-year and 25-year Campus Master Plans, advising the College on everything from dormitory placements, sports stadium impacts (NCAA Division I football, basketball & hockey), structured and at-grade parking, roadway & pedestrian circulation, academic facilities, and open space. Our work provided analysis, study, planning, and design through 5 different project assignments that are still on-going today.
